am often asked by athletes about pre event nervousness. This is situational anxiety. It is the same thing as pre exam nerves or pre public speaking nerves. This is really just negative self-suggestion and self-suggestion is self-hypnosis. A UFC fighter once asked me about it. I asked him how often he fought and he told me every 4 to 8 months depending on the injury. I said “you must be excited about the fight. All your training and preparation for 3 to 5 rounds and your pay day and income based on this fight.” I went on to explain that there is not much difference between nervousness and excitement from a chemical point of view in the body, just your perception of it.
Both will release stress hormones associated with the fight or flight response. Adrenaline and cortisol are released. Just look at the feelings you get when you get on a roller coaster ride. If you weren’t excited about getting on the roller coaster ride you wouldn’t push through this.
It may be that there is more cortisol released in stress than excitement. Excitement creates energy in the body and nervousness depletes energy in the body. So get excited about competing and the nervousness will disappear. It is all about how you perceive the situation, are you excited about it or fearful about it. Change perception and you will energize yourself.
